About This Association

The formation of the 21CCSS resulted from discussions between the founding members (Paul Spence, Jim Fonger, and Sam Pollock) in 1992 during the STS meeting in Orlando, Florida. While waiting to present their papers, they observed that all the moderators for our session were old (at least 40!), had achieved their lofty positions at the right time, and going to be there for decades. They wouldn't care about our issues--they had already made it! The founders recognized the need for our own society to promote the issues important to our generation of academically inclined young surgeons. The first official meeting was in New York City, in the spring of 1994, during the annual meeting of the AATS. Our formation/business/scientific meeting was held in a conference room at the Hilton Hotel. About 18 surgeons attended. The vast majority were our friends from NYU, Allegheny General, or Toronto.
